If you really think about it........things I love about Haiti

Some things I've learned and/or come to love:
  • Mopeds and motorcycles are made for 3-4 people not 1-2
  • 12 passenger vans can comfortably fit 16 or more, there's always room for five more
  • What are seat-belts and car seats??
  • You can have your car fixed right on the side of the street.
  • Riding in the back of pickup trucks, either standing up or sitting on the rim of the bed is a preferred method of transportation....especially on the unpaved, bumpy roads!
  • Banks? Who needs them when you can exchange money on the corner of every street!
  • Don't worry about the ants crawling all over the counters, if they get in your food, they'll add a little protein to your food.
  • Fresh eggs and leftovers don't need to be refrigerated!
  • Washing clothes in a bucket and hanging them on the clothes line works just fine!
  • Who needs hot water??? (for anything)
  • Cold showers or bucket showers are quite refreshing, especially at 5 am.
  • No driving rules, no lines on the streets, ANYTHING goes...such as driving on the wrong side of the street, passing on the left or right, even if you have to go up on the curb or cars are coming the other way! It's always fun when passing a car and a big truck is coming right at you. It's MASS CHAOS, but it works!!
  • Sleeping in a tent is actually not too bad
  • No air-conditioning
  • I don't mind being dirty and sweaty all the time!
  • Many of the kids in the tent cities don't have diapers and some of the older ones don't wear underwear or any other pants, so picking them up is always fun (so far no accidents). :) (yesterday I was holding a little boy and after I put him down, I realized he wasn't wearing any pants OR underwear!!)
  • The people and kids are SO friendly!!! Often when driving down the street and they see you in the back of the truck, they yell 'hey you', not quite sure where they learned it but it's kind of a tradition.
  • Everyone I have talked to and offered prayer to is open and accepting of it, regardless of their beliefs.
  • The orphans LOVE to worship and know ALL the words to the songs! They are AMAZING!
  • There is 'HOPE'!
